Tips for Packing for Cool Fall Weather
Fall is one of the best times to travel! The weather’s cooler, the tourists are fewer, and the scenic getaways are at their peak. But how should you pack for a fall trip especially when faced with the uncertain weather this time of year?
Packing list for cool fall weather
Here is a fall travel packing list to help you manage any swing in fall temperatures while staying comfortable and packing light.
Light, water-resistant outerwear
If you’re traveling to see autumn colors, be sure to pack a fall coat that can handle wind, chill, and a bit of rain. Pick something water-resistant and hooded so you can venture out in cool, damp mornings to see the sights and hike the hikes without discomfort!
Fall Travel tip: Roll your fall jackets when packing up your suitcase. They will get very compact when done this way and you don’t need to worry about wrinkles.
Versatile walking shoes
Whether you’re hiking in a forest, touring a series of wineries, or traveling to busy cities, chances are good that you’ll be putting in a lot more steps than normal. Choose a lightweight, breathable travel shoe that isn’t too bulky.
We suggest a lace-up active shoe like the Tree Runner, made with eucalyptus tree fiber, or if you know the weather will be chilly, a merino wool walking shoe like the Wool Dasher Mizzle. If your fall travel will include lots of hiking, try the water-resistant Trail Runners SWT, for stylish, sturdy, trail-worthy support. Read more about options in comfortable walking shoes for travel.
Fall Travel tip: If you absolutely dread the security line at the airport, go with a slip-on shoe. You can be comfortable and on your way faster with less stress around removing your shoes.
One set of “summery” clothes
We all know those fall days when the sun comes out and it suddenly feels like the dog days of August. Pack at least 1-2 outfits for warm, sunny weather in case fall smiles upon you with a hot day.
Fall Travel tip: Pick a pair of shorts (or skirt) that looks good with your long-sleeve tops. Even more versatility to keep you comfortable in any fall weather!
Tops you can layer together
Your Mom was right. Bring a layer. Those sunny fall afternoons can get very chilly when the clouds come in or the sun goes down. Bring cardigans, hoodies, or long-sleeved t-shirts as a first add-on layer. Then you can always go a step further and put on your fall jacket and scarf from there.
Fall Travel tip: Wear your light layer to the airport, too. It will give you one less thing to pack and you’ll have something to put on when the plane AC gets too aggressive.
Warmer options for any activity
Especially if you’re going from a warm climate to an unpredictable fall climate like New England, the Pacific Northwest, New York City, or the Nordic countries (to name a few), you may want extra warmth at unexpected times.
Grab a warm layer that you can wear to a nice dinner or night out, not just your touristy wanderings. Pack a flannel pajama option if you anticipate cold nights. Even mittens, hats, or scarves—they may be the best things you pack if you really need them!
Fall Travel tip: Scarves & cozy hats can make great pillows when you’re looking to rest while traveling! Ball up your scarf, shove it in your hat, and get a little shut-eye while waiting for take-off.
Wherever your fall travel takes you, you’ll be prepared for any type of weather or activity. Enjoy the crisp air & the fall scenery on your next trip!
