6 Easy Steps to Make Walking a Habit
In a world that seems to be increasingly sedentary, taking up a physical activity as simple as walking can provide nice benefits to your health and well-being. But how do you make walking a habit that actually sticks?
We’ve compiled some easy tips to try that will help turn walking into a routine you look forward to—while reaping its rewards.
Set goals, then adjust them
As a beginner, you should aim for about 20-30 minutes of brisk walking a day, which can be increased gradually as your stamina improves. If you need to start with 10 minutes, that’s still a great place to start!
Remember: there’s absolutely nothing wrong with starting small. Your goal could be as simple as walking around the block during lunch or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Do whatever works for you.
Once you feel good about that goal, adjust it as needed. Try to go for longer walks, more challenging walks, or go at a faster pace as your body accommodates your new fitness routine.
Establish a routine
Schedule walking as you would any other important activity in your life. After all, consistency is key in forming habits. Aim to walk at least 5 days a week to get regular physical activity without overwhelming yourself. Try to choose a time of day that you feel energized and try to prioritize your walk before you start the next thing. This could be immediately before or after breakfast, after getting home from work, or at a certain time when your other duties are at a lull. (Go ahead and block your calendar or set an alarm to trigger you to lace up your walking shoes and get out there.)
Your walks don’t have to be the same duration all the time; just try to stay consistent with your walking routine.
Get a walking buddy
Having a friend to go on walks with has a few nice benefits. It gives you pleasant conversation, passes the time more quickly, you can challenge each other’s pace, and it provides accountability. It’s hard to skip your walk when your friend is out front waiting for you!
Make it the best part of your day
Your walk will probably end up being the highlight of your day. For days when you can’t walk with a buddy, turn your walking time into an occasion to listen to a favorite podcast, audiobook, or new music. Go walking in places you love, like a local park, a scenic trail, or even a beautiful neighborhood. Bring your dog along and enjoy the fresh air and time moving your body. The more enjoyable your walks are, the more likely you’ll stick with the habit.
Give yourself a destination (or a treat!)
If you’re motivated by rewards (hello, coffee), why not walk to a destination? How far is the nearest coffee shop or pet shelter or friend’s house? By giving yourself a place to walk to that you enjoy, you won’t be able to cut it short, and you’ll have a pleasant experience once you arrive.
Invest in comfortable footwear
Your choice of shoes can make the difference between an enjoyable walk and a painful ordeal. Good walking shoes should offer adequate support, breathability, and cushioning that will make your walks comfortable, and easy on your feet.
